An arm rod is the thin control rod running from the puppeteer’s hand to the puppet’s hand, transmitting gesture to a puppet whose arms are not directly worn.
Small component, disproportionate impact. Rods that are the wrong length, weight or angle make a puppet look like it is being operated rather than like it is moving.
Materials
Thin steel welding rod is the traditional choice — stiff, springy, and thin enough to disappear against a background. Piano wire works. Wooden dowel is heavier and more visible but easier to source and safer for children’s workshops. Carbon fibre rod is the premium option: very stiff, very light, expensive.
Attachment
The rod connects at the puppet’s palm or just behind it, usually with a loop or eye sewn into the hand so the rod can pivot. A rigid connection locks the wrist and every gesture reads stiff. A pivoting one lets the hand fall naturally and follow through after the movement stops — and that follow-through is most of what sells the gesture as alive.
Angle and length
The rod should run back toward the performer at an angle that keeps it out of the puppet’s silhouette and doesn’t cross the body. Length is set by the performer’s reach with arms raised — too short and the arm can’t extend fully, too long and it is unwieldy and the tip wanders into frame.
Finish
Matte black, always. A bare metal rod catches light and pulls the audience’s eye straight to the mechanism.
The hack: put a small bend or a bead at the grip end. In a dark wing, finding the rod by feel beats looking for it.
