Flocking is the application of short fibres to an adhesive-coated surface, producing a soft velvety texture on something that was hard underneath.
What it is for in puppetry
Giving a cast, moulded or 3D-printed part a surface that reads as skin or fur rather than as plastic. Resin eyes, printed features, cast noses and rigid props all betray themselves under light, and flocking kills the shine.
How it works
The surface is coated in adhesive, then fibres are applied — puffed on, sieved on, or blown with an electrostatic applicator that stands them on end for a denser, more even finish. Once cured, the excess is brushed off.
Why it matters more than it sounds
The eye reads specular highlight as hard and matte as soft. A perfectly sculpted rigid feature next to soft fleeceFleece is the knit fabric used as the outer skin on most mod... More looks wrong, and the reason is almost always shine rather than shape. Flocking makes the transition between materials disappear.
Colour
Fibres come in a wide colour range, and matching the surrounding fleece closely is what makes the join invisible. Matching adhesive colour to fibre colour helps hide any thin patches.
Where builders use it
Inside mouths, on cast facial features, on animatronic housings, on eyelids, and on any hard part that has to sit against soft material.
The limitation
it wears. Handled areas rub bare over time, and it does not survive repeated flexing, so it belongs on rigid parts rather than anything that squashes.
The hack: test on scrap with the same adhesive and the same lighting you will perform under. Flocking looks dramatically different under stage light than on a workbench.
