Why the square edge fails
Two foam edges pressed together at ninety degrees meet along a hard line. The foam can’t blend across it, so there is a subtle groove — and fleece, being thin and stretchy, follows that groove exactly. Under stage light it reads as a scar.
The angle

The tools
A long sharp blade drawn in one continuous motion — a serrated bread knife works better on foam than any craft knife, because the teeth cut rather than compress. A short blade sawing back and forth produces a wavy edge. Some builders skive freehand with sharp shears held at an angle, which is faster and takes practice to keep consistent.
After gluing
Even a good skive leaves a slight ridge. A sanding sponge worked lightly across the seam takes it flush.
The hack: skive on scrap until you can hold the angle for a full six inches without wandering. It is ten minutes of practice that improves every head you build after it.
