How to Promote Your Puppet Show and Fill More Seats (Even on a Budget)
Why Promoting Your Puppet Show Matters
You’ve purchased, commissioned, or built your puppets from scratch, created beautifully detailed and imagination fueled stories, rehearsed your scripts, and FINALLY booked your venue… but without an audience, even the best puppet show ends up falling flat.
The good news? You don’t need a massive advertising budget to pack the room. With the right marketing hacks, you can turn your puppet show into a must-see community event and build a buzz.
I put together a bunch of proven methods to promote your puppet show, build that crucial buzz any entertainer seeks, and fill more seats… even if you’re on a tight budget.
Best to roll up your sleeves and get in typing or copy pasta mode or grab a notepad. Jot down a couple actionable items you can take from this post, put them into action, come back to this post and write down your next ones.
I’ll throw a Hack: and sometimes a
Super Hack: at the end of each section to give you a good push on an action item to start with.

Start with Your Story (and Your Puppet’s Voice)
People don’t buy tickets to “a puppet show” as much as they are buying into the puppet show experience.
Is your show funny, educational, heartwarming? Lead with that story.
Hack: Write a short, punchy description that explains the benefit to your chosen audience. Example: “An interactive puppet adventure that teaches kindness and makes kids laugh out loud.”
Super Hack: Record a 30-second teaser video where your puppet invites families to the show. Share it on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Ask your friends and family to show it some love.
Leverage Free Community Channels
Schools, libraries, and local organizations are always looking for family-friendly events. Even if your show is paid, many will happily list it in their newsletters or bulletin boards. Or better yet, invite you to perform at their location. You can set up generations of parents that will hire you for kids parties just by being known around your local library.
I get sometimes it’s awkward to ask, but this is just as much about you sharing your passion of puppetry as it is a gig, especially when seeding your local community with your show.
Send a one-page flyer or PDF. (school and library emails are easy to find. 1 off performance locations like stages, coffee shops shouldn’t be hard to reach either – heck drop them off!)
Ask to be included in community newsletters. Offer a discount code for people who come from those media opportunities.
Post to local Facebook Groups and bulletin boards. Find that parents group that will get people buzzing about you.
Hack: Use Canva to design a flyer in minutes. Keep it bold, colorful, and puppet-focused; not text-heavy. Main points and move on.

Harness Word of Mouth (The OG of Social Media)
Your audience can become your best promoters if you give them the tools:
Offer a photo-op with your puppets before or after your show. Heck just have it setup as a part of the shows after so it’s just a thing. Tell folks your hashtag of choice. Ex. your puppet shows name! You should even get a pull-up banner that you use just for photo ops with people. They are $100 at local print shops these days.
Hand out postcards with your next event date and website. Trying to promote for finding gigs? Add a how to book your puppet experience on the other side.
Encourage parents and teachers to tag you on social media. Talk to the schools PTA reps they’ll typically be happy to help you out and may have their own socials for the community that can help promote you. Offer a performance discount that goes back to the school/PTA as a donation. Builds your goodwill in the area, helps yourself in the process.
Hack: Create a simple show hashtag like #PuppetMagicNY so families and educators can share photos and stories.

Social Media: Focus Where Families Already Are
You don’t need to post everywhere. Focus on the platforms parents and educators are using the most:
Facebook: Create an event page and post updates. Get into local community groups.
Instagram: Share stories and reels with your puppet characters. Make it a taste of your show so people can experience you now.
TikTok: Quick, funny clips that show off your puppets’ personalities. Great for your own character development too.
Hack: Plan a simple 3-week promotion cycle: (Remember: Film the entire bit in 1 shot so you have the footage in an easy to handle way and can create the content in one shot instead of it dragging on. Bonus you can schedule it with tools like Linktr.ee’s Planning Tools)
3 weeks before: Behind-the-scenes rehearsal clip.
2 weeks before: Puppet teaser video (“See you at the library!”).
Show week: Countdown posts + a day-of reminder.
Collaborate & Cross-Promote
You don’t have to do this alone. Partner with local establishments and help each other out:
Local coffee shops, bookstores, toy stores → they display your flyer, you shout them out online. Kick it up to chamber of commerce’s too. Get to know your local community members and they’ll get to know you too!
Fellow performers (magicians, storytellers, musicians) → swap promotions. There is a lot of cross-over in these professions and opportunities to help each other out.
Parent groups or schools → offer discount codes for group bookings. Book for all schools in the DISTRICT instead of just trying to land one school. Booking for 4-5 schools in a week is a lot better and can even give you travel options and mini-tours. You can also do an “inside-out” if you know someone from local PTA, parent, whomever and get into one school, have a killer show, and then push it up the chain to the district (give them free social media clips at their locations, etc..) to share.
Hack: Create an EPK (electronic press kit) here on our site for free and send it to all of your potential partners so it’s easy for them to share.

Don’t Forget Local Media
Community newspapers, radio stations, and local blogs love family-friendly events. Remember, your offering is a value to the community: you’re not just putting on a show, you’re enriching local culture with laughter, creativity, and connection. People love stories about neighbors doing something unique and inspiring, and puppetry naturally draws that interest. Share that passion boldly. (You’re also giving parents a destination where they can catch a breath.. or even have your own adult puppet show for the late-night crowd)
Write a short press release (under 400 words) and lead with the hook: why this show matters to your community right now. Maybe it’s part of a seasonal celebration, a charity event, or your group’s anniversary performance. Give them a reason to care beyond the ticket.
Offer an interview with your puppet character for extra fun.. or yourself! You can even suggest a short demo on air or a “behind the scenes” photo shoot. The options are endless. Don’t sleep on your local TV stations they want content. Even if you don’t make it the first time on air, at least you’ll get to know your local TV people who may know of other opportunities locally for you.
Search for local influencers, community calendars, podcasters, and event roundups, then send them your EPK made right here at Puppet Hacks. Include a few photos, your show blurb, and a contact number.
Hack: Save one press release template and reuse it for every show. Just update the date, location, and title and keep building relationships with those same media contacts each time. A little consistency can make your troupe a local legend.
